What is the Metadata API?

The Metadata API is a service allowing any Cloud Server to access data about itself. Information such as the server's public IP, datacenter location, DNS configuration and UserData are all accessible. UserData is data that can be provided during the server’s creation, and is based on Cloud Init. Usually the UserData data is a piece of code and it is automatically executed the first time the server boots. Therefore, taking advantage of the Metadata API and configuring UserData during the creation of servers can help automate the initial configuration of the server.
